Flannery O'Connor
"The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it."
Self portrait oil on board by the writer.
The halo behind her head has been compared to saint icons of the Orthodox Church;
but, I believe she was playing with a couple themes. Perhaps it is merely a big brimmed
straw hat shading her from the Southern sun? Or even the sun rising in the morning?
The color palette of the pheasant is not one of the hundred peahens on her farm, it is
drab rust, autumnal browns and black. The humor of the straight faced writer and the
broody hen looks the viewer in the heart. She knew herself.

Fog
Fog in the evening rolls in from the seas
hangs low in the sky to hug palm trees
Memory of those gone from my life
stirred sticks with purple loose strife
Digging toes, find graves in the sand
Continue to reach for a healing hand
Children in Paradise are back at school
Fog triggers emotion of death by a fuel

Fireworks Parade
Fireworks Poem
the world on fire
screaming desire
speaking in caps
diplomat mishaps
Do you worry
about being hacked?
about kids in cages?
about climate change?
about cuts to dear?
the smell of sulfur
earth gastric ulcer
tanks breaking ice
dream of paradise

Waterfall Willson Dam
Willson Dam Poem
Carbide transforms for acetylene lamps
Magic calcium and nitrogen gas
makes a cheap nitrogenous solid
cheap to grind into farm fertilizer.
Far from the odor of fertilizer
All finances from the fortune of lamps
He builds a compound and dam so solid
Pumping Lac Meech uphill as if was gas.
Call him crazy Elon Musk so solid
what remains of the plant is merely gas
wells flow as light grows a fertilizer
Carbide Willson's passion still ignites lamps.

Blue Jay
Blue Jay
Found an injured scrub jay in November.
Aphelocoma Californica, in fact.
Because we have facts in print, remember.
Fear she would die before I found a Vet.
No animal control officer help.
Watched Youtube videos on how to set
the blue jay's wing flapping like torn sea kelp.
Fed her drops of treats to regain her life.
Last weekend my son came home from college.
Blossom, that is her name, is ready strong.
Opened her pen near the Okame trees.
She didn't fly, cocked her head, which felt wrong
Then a buzzing diddy came from the bees,
they are working and practicing their song.
Velvet cone flowers lift while she sails on.
What to do she has her boyfriend back for treats?
